Congratulations to our volunteer of the year
Help On Your Doorstep is thrilled to share the wonderful news that our volunteer, Mary Stanfield, has been highly commended and officially awarded Older Volunteer of the Year. This recognition reflects the incredible dedication, creativity, and warmth Mary has brought to our community throughout more than eight years of service.
Mary has become a cherished presence in Canonbury, known for her tireless fundraising and her remarkable commitment to supporting local residents. Her regular £1 fundraising stall has raised over £2,000 in recent years, helping to fund garden boxes, soil, gazebos, and arts and crafts materials that enrich daily life for many. She has also played a valued role in our Macmillan Coffee Mornings and other charitable initiatives, always finding new ways to give back.
Mary has also taken loving ownership of our communal gardens, maintaining the space, allocating garden boxes to residents, and helping this treasured green corner of Canonbury flourish.
Her creativity and generosity shine through in every activity she touches. Whether teaching pom pom and bookmark making, baking cakes for lunch clubs and birthdays, or finding clever ways to stretch our resources, Mary brings joy and warmth to each gathering. She is often the first to welcome new members, helping them feel comfortable and connected.
Mary’s own journey with the Good Neighbours Scheme has been transformative discovering purpose, confidence, and deep friendships through volunteering. Mary often says the community feels like her extended family — and her award is a tribute not just to what she gives, but to the bonds she has built.
At 76 years old, Mary remains a source of energy, kindness, and inspiration to everyone around her. Her resilience and positivity embody the very best of community spirit.
We could not be prouder to celebrate Mary as Older Volunteer of the Year at Voluntary Action Islington awards.
