The journey from outreach to volunteering

When Fabiana met Chanelle, one of our Connect Advisors, on her doorstep little did she know that the conversation would lead her to volunteering regularly, attending training and dropping off art supplies to a local family.

When Fabiana met Chanelle, one of our Connect Advisors, on her doorstep little did she know that the conversation would lead her to volunteering regularly, attending training and dropping off art supplies to a local family.

The Help on Your Doorstep team knock on 20,000 Islington doors every year, providing information and referrals to specialist advice organisations and services. As part of this conversation, Fabiana discovered that she could volunteer for the organisation. Fabiana has been volunteering with Help on Your Doorstep since September 2019.

Knowing someone is there for you

Fabiana enjoys giving back to her local community, saying:

"I volunteer in the Walter Sickert Community Centre, Canonbury. I have already gained valuable insights into the work and ethos of Help on Your Doorstep. It has reinforced my own belief that everyone benefits from the reassuring knowledge that someone is there for them, to support them when they need it – no matter their age, gender, culture, or financial situation.

The entire team from Walter Sickert and everyone I've met from the other Good Neighbours Schemes are amazing, professional and supportive...I feel privileged to be part of the team and to be part of Islington community."

Benefits of volunteering

Although Help on Your Doorstep’s services have moved online in response to coronavirus, Fabiana continues to support members of her community.

After attending a training session on mental health awareness, she is putting the knowledge learned the organisation to use. Recently she came across a family who had 2 small children who were shielding as a result of COVID-19 and wanted to ensure that they had access to play opportunities.

Providing Help on Your Doorstep

Fabiana contacted Nicky, our Good Neighbours Coordinator, to ask whether Help on Your Doorstep had any resources that might help. Nicky arranged for Fabiana to pick up an arts and crafts kit, which Fabiana dropped off to the family. The children were delighted to receive the kit, which contained paints, paint brushes, colouring pencils, coloured paper and stickers
