6 sources of support for carers When caring for others it's really important to care for yourselves. For National Carers Week 2020 we have put together a list of resources to support carers in Islington. According to research there are 13.6 million unpaid carers in the UK, equivalent to 26% of the population! UK Carers estimates that 4.5 million people in the UK have become unpaid carers in a matter of weeks due to COVID-19 crisis. This week (Monday 8th June-Sunday 14th June 2020) is Carers Week! It is a national initiative which highlights the importance of unpaid carers, the challenges that carers face and recognises the contribution they make to families and their communities. Support for Carers Islington Carers Hub is continuing to support carers during COVID-19. Their priority is your wellbeing and supporting you in your caring role. Centre 404 offers a range of high quality services to assist children and adults with a learning disability and their family carers. Grandparents Plus runs an advice service is here for you, if you want to email, call or connect with them on Facebook and they regularly update the website with vital information and advice. Islington Council normally runs a monthly support group for Special Guardians and Kinship Foster Carers who are caring for children from or in Islington. Contact the Family Plus team on 0207 527 1012 for more information and dates of meet-ups post COVID-19. Islington Council has information about where to get help, including how to apply for a carer’s assessment. Carers UK is here to make sure that no matter how complicated your query or your experience, you don't have to care alone. Caring can be extremely complicated get the support you need on their website from their online forums and fact sheets. The NHS has an extensive social care and support guide.
